SOILWISE PROJECT

ACTIVITIES IN THE PAST SIX MONTHS OF THE PROJECT

SOILWISE CATALOGUE STATUS

Following the completion of the Integration and Validation phase, the SoilWise project has now entered the Demonstration phase. During the previous stage, the second prototype of the SoilWise Metadata Catalogue was developed and released. The catalogue is now ready for stakeholder demonstrations, training activities, and testing sessions supporting its further refinement and integration  into the European Soil Observatory.

READ MORE ON OUR ACTIVITIES

During the previous phase, the project advanced metadata harvesting from open repositories, improved metadata management, enhanced the chatbot prototype, and created a new interface of the SoilWise Metadata Catalogue. The updated catalogue supports easier access to soil data and knowledge in line with FAIR principles.

SOILWISE EVENTS

SoilWise Webinar: Capacity & Community Building Session

The SoilWise Project webinar, held on 23 April 2026, brought together the soil community to explore the project, its tools, and key results. Participants learned how SoilWise supports FAIR soil data and knowledge, with a focus on making soil information easier to access, share, and use. The session introduced key project outputs, the new interface of the Metadata Catalogue, and the Soil Companion smart chatbot, showing how these resources can support researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and everyone interested in soil health. It also included an open community discussion, creating space to exchange ideas, ask questions, and strengthen connections across the SoilWise network for the future.

Demo Sessions

Demo session with SOILL

Following progress in the second development cycle of SoilWise Data and Knowledge Catalogue, demo events will take place from April to June across all Use Cases. As part of this process, SoilWise and SOILL organised an online training on SoilWise tools for FAIR soil data and knowledge management. Designed for Mission Soil Living Lab representatives and researchers, the session introduced tools and insights supporting access to, management and publication of FAIR soil data across Europe, as well as integration with the European Soil Observatory. Participants learned how to make Living Lab data and knowledge more visible, use the Metadata Catalogue, and apply FAIR principles.

Hands-on sessions with the Mission Soil community

Following the co-design of the SoilWise Catalogue and its key functionalities, SoilWise partners from CIRAD hosted interactive, hands-on sessions with the Mission Soil community. These exchanges aimed to align the development of the SoilWise Catalogue with the practical needs of data and knowledge managers and the application of FAIR principles. They also introduced the Practical Guide for Knowledge and Data Providers, using concrete examples of observational data and websites to support future contributions to the catalogue.

SoilWise Work Package Leads Meeting

SoilWise Work Package leads met in Wageningen for a full-day workshop focused on aligning technical requirements and shaping the vision for the project’s final products to be taken up by the EU Soil Observatory. Hosted by ISRIC – World Soil Information, the meeting brought together expertise from across the consortium to clarify priorities, strengthen coordination, and define a shared direction for the final phase of development. The workshop marked an important step toward ensuring that SoilWise outputs are practical, well-integrated, and ready to support long-term use.

SoilWise EVENTS PARTICIPATION

EJP SOIL National Hub Meeting

SoilWise was pleased to participate in the EJP SOIL National Hub Meeting, where our coordinators from ILVO presented key project results and discussed how SoilWise can support the EU Soil Monitoring Law and improve the FAIRness of soil data in Belgium and across Europe. The meeting enabled valuable exchange with stakeholders from Wallonia, Flanders and Brussels on soil monitoring, carbon farming, modelling, emissions, mitigation and contamination.

European Carbon Farming Summit 2026

SoilWise Project team participated in the European Carbon Farming Summit, held on 17–19 March 2026 in Padua, Italy. The event brought together researchers, policymakers, land managers, businesses and project developers to discuss the future of carbon farming, regenerative agriculture, and carbon monitoring across Europe.

LOOKING AHEAD

SoilWise Demo Sessions

Coming up: Following the progress achieved during the second development cycle of the SoilWise Data and Knowledge Catalogue, a new series of demonstration events will take place until the end of June across all five Use Cases. These sessions will showcase the latest developments of the repository and offer stakeholders a hands-on opportunity to explore its improved functionalities, enhanced usability, and expanding soil data and knowledge services.

SoilWise at Soils for Europe Conference

SoilWise will take part in the Soils for Europe Conference, taking place on 7–11 September in Coimbra, Portugal. The event will provide an important opportunity to engage with the wider European soil community, exchange knowledge, and share project developments related to soil data, knowledge flows, and FAIR data practices. Participation in the conference will also support discussions on how SoilWise outcomes can contribute to improved access, management, and use of soil knowledge across Europe.

Next SoilWise Consortium Meeting

Our next consortium meeting will take place in September 2026 in Brno, Czech Republic, hosted by our project coordinator, Masaryk University. As SoilWise enters its final year, partners will come together to discuss project challenges, share insights, and explore strategies for future progress and lasting impact.
